In order to adapt to the requirements of the Law on packaging and packaging waste, pharmaceutical laboratories (Pharmaindustry), distributors (FEDIFAR) and the General Council of the Association of Pharmacists set up a not-for-profit organisation called SIGRE, Sistema integrat de gestió i recollida d'envasos (Integrated packaging collection and management system).

SIGRE is responsible for implementing and developing the collection of medicines from chemists’ and public health centres and for meeting all the costs of its operation. The SIGRE’s activity can be summarised as follows:

• Collection of the packaging of pharmaceutical products marketed by laboratories in Spain for the purpose of recycling it.
• Collection, sorting and treatment, by type and composition, of other pharmaceutical products in order to ensure their proper management.
• To encourage member laboratories, through Business Prevention Plans, to adopt prevention measures that enable the packaging generated to be reduced in the future.
