The Generalitat
de Catalunya Environment Award for Waste Reduction and Recycling
Actions is designed to recognise contributions to the sustainable
development of the country through initiatives and actions aimed
at achieving the objectives of waste prevention, reduction, and
recycling.

Prevention and reduction. Establiments Viena, SA, for their efforts in prevention when establishing a waste plan based on the centralisation of manufacture of environmentally-friendly products to supply their establishments and for the outstanding example they set in the sector.

Recycling. Cinemes Oscar in Girona, for their effort in disseminating good recycling practices, and the establishment of a waste management plan in the cinemas involving both clients and workers.

Candidates given awards for social-labour insertion projects relating to waste recovery and recycling:
- Prevention and reduction. Fundació Futur, because their work is based on fair trade, labour reinsertion and sustainability through environmentally-friendly actions.
- Special mention to Reutil, for the achievement of prevention objectives through the creation of a webpage which acts as a platform for the exchange of objects free of charge.
- Recycling. Fundació Marianao, because they have created an educational social-labour insertion space for young people and at the same time a space that generates sustainability through the recycling and recovery of bicycles.
- Special mention to CIPO SCCL, for attainment of recycling objectives through the collection of domestic cooking oil in the municipal markets in Sabadell.

Five prizes were awarded and one special mention was made. No prizes were awarded in the categories of childcare centres and universities.
- Escoles Bressol award to the Grup Sagessa of Reus, for the originality of the sleeping butterfly mascot, created to encourage recycling. This character establishes a methodology for teaching youngsters about selective waste collection, and has the slogan “Per més petit que sigui jo, també soc un ciutadà com cal" [“Even though I’m very small, I’m a good citizen”], which contributes to raising awareness.Infant education award to the CEIP Enric Grau Fontseré in Flix, for originality in developing the project "Jo reciclo, i tu?" [“I recycle, do you?”], carried out with schoolchildren aged 4.
- Primary education award to the Escola Vedruna in Ripoll, for work on joint actions to raise awareness and participation of students in waste management and sustainability. These actions are part of the Cultural Days at the school, based on well-planned activities with a well tied-in outcome consisting of the distribution of cards accrediting the students as "defenders of the earth".
- Secondary education award to L'IES Vallvera in Salt, for setting an example in actions taken and for the value of these actions. A consumerist social custom, the Secret Santa gift exchange, has been taken and converted into a reason to reuse waste, a creative activity and one which changes habits by making it clear that the important part of giving a gift is the giving.
- Batxillerat and cicles formatius [Voluntary secondary education and further education] award to L'Escola Pia in Sant Antoni, for work on raising awareness within the school community on sustainable behaviour. This involved a high degree of participation and was evaluated using questionnaires and statistics. An important part of the project was the drawing up of a manifesto with special emphasis on selective waste collection and waste reduction.
- University award to the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) for its innovative action, of great interest in the educational and professional sphere, which encourages waste prevention along the lines of the strategy "Gestió de residus i ambientalització" [“Waste management and greening”] with a specific programme: making the purchasing and services of the UAB more environmentally friendly by basing them on criteria of sustainability and ethics.

- Prevention and reduction. Sant Cugat del Vallès Council, for setting an example by supplying reusable nappies to nurseries and providing a collection service.
- Special mention to Girona City Council, for the initiative of creating an exchange market including a virtual rubbish tip which the user can walk through while seeking the best path to take to dispose of their waste.
- Selective collection and recycling. Barcelona City Council, for the development of waste recovery workshops at some of the collection centres in Barcelona using personnel from social-labour reinsertion groups.
- Special mention to the Bages Waste Management Consortium, for promoting prevention and selective waste collection in all the municipalities of the region, through the environmental park, which is a central communicative element for the Consortium.
