Letter “O”. Selective waste collection. |
 |
| |
In Catalonia more than 3,500,000 tons of waste are produced each year. Each citizen generates approximately 540 kg of waste a year.
Therefore, if we selectively collect the waste, we save resources and energy and contribute to reducing the impact of the climatic change. We also ensure that the controlled landfills have a longer useful life.
In short, with these actions we improve the life conditions of the present and future generations.

Letter “R”. Organic fraction |
 |
| |
40% in weight of our rubbish is organic waste. If this is not collected selectively and ends up in a landfill, it can cause environmental problems. Good management and treatment contribute to a significant environmental improvement . |
 |
| |
Letter “G”. Organic fraction |
 |
| |
The organic fraction is all waste from living beings: animal and vegetable. It is basically composed of food and plant remains that, on breaking down, become compost (organic manure). |
 |
| |
Letter “À”. Organic fraction |
 |
| |
The organic fraction is made up of:
- Fruit and vegetable remains
- Meat and fish remains
- Egg and dried fruit shells
- Kitchen paper and dirty serviettes
- Coffee dregs and infusions
- Bunches of flowers and vegetable remains (grass, leaves and twigs)
- Sawdust and corks

 |
| |
Letter “N”. From the organic fraction we make compost |
 |
| |
For every 100 kg of organic fraction selectively collected and suitably composted along with vegetable wastes, we obtain some 20 kg of quality compost. In Catalonia there is a network of composting and anaerobic digestion plants that recycle the organic fraction. |
 |
| |
Letter “I”. Compost |
 |
| |
Compost is an organic product that comes from the organic waste composting process, the use of which can be beneficial for the soil and/or the development of plants. |
 |
| |
Letter “C”. Now it depends on you too. |
 |
| |
It is very easy to help to transform the organic fraction into compost. When throwing out organic wastes, just do not mix them with the other waste, but place them in a specific bin, preferably using compostable bags.
Then this waste must be given to the collection service according to the system indicated by the town hall (brown containers, “door to door” collection, etc.) |
 |
| |
Letter “A”. We use the compost |
 |
| |
Quality compost is considered a totally natural fertiliser.
The use of quality compost in soil:
- Gives organic material and nutrients
- Makes the land looser and more porous
- Makes the soil hold more water
- Saves on chemical fertilisers
May be used in:
- Agriculture
- Gardening
- Soil restoration
