Mini-collection centres are small facilities within the urban framework that bring the service closer to the public and make it easier for them to take part in the recovery of municipal waste. Logistically, they come under the town’s main collection centre, to which the waste collected is transferred periodically.
The PROGREMIC 2001-2006 mentions these centres in reference to the need to supplement the current collection centre network with local mini-collection centres in large towns.
There are basically two types of mini-collection centre:
Local collection centres (punt verd): fixed installations in areas easy for citizens to get to. Thanks to the personal attention they offer, these centres are ideal for raising environmental awareness. Mini-collection centres can be promoted as and environmental education and information centres.
Collection centres on the premises of small waste recoverers: these fit into the urban framework on existing premises of local scrap merchants, with a few alterations to the premises and carrying out the pertinent administrative processes so that at least glass, paper, packaging, car batteries, scrap iron and CFC-free household appliances, hazardous municipal waste, tyres and wood can be collected safely. With this system the merchant recovers what fraction of the waste he can and hands the rest over to the main collection centre. |
