Selective collection in surface containers consists of putting containers of different types on the streets, depending on the fraction to be collected, which people use to put their refuse in. The containers are emptied periodically, at frequencies adapted to the generation and characteristics of each waste fraction.
In general, the organic fraction is collected in two-wheeled bins, and the rest in igloo or other higher-capacity containers. The containers for final waste and OFMSW are usually together (on the pavement), and those for glass, paper-card and packaging (drop-off areas).
This is the most widespread system in Catalonia. A clear relationship has been established between the number of containers and the results achieved: the fewer inhabitants per container, the greater the levels of selective collections. |
