The function of sorting plants is to sort the incoming material with the option of separating recoverable fractions and prepare them for marketing. Non-segregated materials are prepared for final treatment.
Sorting plants operate using a combination of selection processes: mechanical or automated and manual. For this reason, it is essential that strict criteria be adopted in all matters of occupational health and safety.
Broadly speaking, sorting plants have five work areas: the waste reception area, the sorting line, the pressing and baling area, the materials storage area and the offices. Trucks arrive at the reception area and are weighed. Here the waste is put on the line, where the actual sorting takes place. Recovered waste is pressed and stored until it is taken to recycling plants.
The size and capacity of each plant depends on the municipality or group of municipalities, so all aspects of size and capacity are measured according to the amount and type of waste to be treated. |
