As the name indicates, the European Compost Network (ECN) is a European network intended to encourage organic waste sustainable practices, basically in the area of composting and anaerobic digestion, but also concerning other processes (mechanical-biological treatments).
Founded in October 2002, the European Compost Network is constituted within ORBIT (Organic Recovery & Biological Treatment), of people from different areas around Europe.

The sustainable management of organic waste is based on efficient selective waste collection, suitable composting processes by the managers, the production of quality compost and its safe application.
The European Commission has contemplated these concepts in the working drafts of the “Directive on the Biological Treatment of Biodegradable Waste” (probably enforced in 2005).
Based on these criteria, the ECN has established various work groups:
WG1: Scientific Support to the Community Directive.
WG2: Standard for evaluating the quality of the compost.
WG3: The role of biological treatments in making organic waste hygienic.
WG4: Quality Management in treatment plants (including selective waste collection).
WG5: Organic waste and community strategy in protecting the soil.
WG6: Support for development around Europe (especially in Mediterranean countries and new community members)
WG7: Information and Public Relations
