When considering the strategy to be followed, it is necessary to bear in mind not only the reduction of commercialised packaging, but also the reduction of its generated impact. In this section, we propose a series of reduction measures planned in current regulations:
- Increase in the proportion of reusable packaging over single use packaging.
- Increase in the proportion of recyclable packaging over packaging that is not recyclable.
- Improvement of the properties of the packaging so that it may be rotated more times if reusable, or the recycling conditions may be improved if it is not.
- Reduction in the weight of used material per packaging, especially with single use packaging.
- The non-use of surplus packaging.
- Use of larger packaging when this enables the ratio between container and content to be reduced.
- Increase in the proportion of product distributed in bulk with respect to that distributed in single use packaging.
- Inclusion of secondary materials from waste recycling in packaging.
- Reduction or elimination of heavy metal content in packaging.
