What is Design for recycling?

It is a design strategy that bears in mind environmental criteria aimed at:

  • using recycled materials in the manufacture of new products (production stage)
  • facilitating product recycling at the end of their useful life (end-of-life stage)

The development of design for recycling is a waste prevention measure adopted by a company with respect to a product it manufactures.
Strategies
 

The design for recycling strategies can be classified into two different groups:

Strategies for recycling

  • Replacement of new materials with recycled materials
  • Reuse of parts or components

Strategies for recyclability

  • Use of single materials
  • Elimination of toxic and dangerous products
  • Modular design, easy to dismantle
  • Part identification with codes
  • Use of compatible materials
