| For the
first time in its history, the 31st edition of the
prestigious Delta Awards of Industrial Design, awarded
by the Associació de Disseny Industrial del
Foment de les Arts Decoratives (ADI FAD) every two
years, evaluated the environmental behaviour of the
candidate projects. As a result, most of the winners
satisfy some environmental consideration.
The environmentalisation of the Delta Awards is the
result of an agreement signed between ADI-FAD and
the Centre català del reciclatge (CCR- Catalan
Recycling Center) so that it might actively take part
in the award bases and the candidature evaluation.
The CCR, which belongs to the Agència de Residus
de Catalunya of the Department of the Environment
and Housing, has the aim of promoting recycling in
different surroundings, such as industrial design.
Industrial design is a fundamental tool for preventing
waste and emissions, and for reducing the consumption
of raw materials and energy associated with product
manufacture. Overall, it is estimated that 93 % of
the materials used in producing goods directly become
waste. The environmental variable must therefore be
included alongside the remaining demands, as they
are considered when designing a product: cost, quality,
safety, utility, etc. and this involves collaboration
between designers and environmental experts.
The experience of the Delta Awards, which is added
to the Design for recycling awards given by the CCR
and in the jury participated in by ADI-FAD, is a clear
example that dialogue and co-operation between designers
and environmental experts is necessary. This collaboration
is at the start of a long road for environmentalisation
to become an intrinsic value in designing any product.
The Delta d’Or Award, and four of the six Plata
Awards, bring in some environmental consideration
related basically to the recyclability of the material
used or the extension of the product life span: in
both cases, the waste generated is reduced as well
as the consumption of natural resources in making
a product. Furthermore, the mention “Design
for all”, awarded to Griferia Milà, includes
a cold water opening system for saving energy.
202 candidatures were presented at the Delta Awards,
of which 49 were selected. The awards containing some
environmental characteristics are the following:
- Delta d’Or. Safates Delica.
Made with a single material: wood (renewable resource).
- Delta de Plata. Paperera de platja Bina.
Made with a single material to facilitate recycling,
and stackable, reducing volume and therefore transport
needs.
- Delta de Plata. Lluminària Neón
de luz.Low consumption fluorescent with
a system of reflectors to give high output. Recyclable
90 % and the packaging 100 %..
- Delta de Plata. Extractor de bany X-Mart.A
design and extends the life of the product: the
outer cover is removable and may be cleaned.
- Delta de Plata. Vitrina Collector.
Single material, recyclable, reuses materials (in
this case a laboratory funnel)
- Menció disseny per tothom. Griferia
Milà. Including a patented system
for opening the cold water to save energy.
Within the framework of the collaboration of ARC
with ADI FAD in the Delta Awards 2005, on the past
30th May 2005, there was the seminar “Opportunities
for improving products: the inclusion of the environmental
variable”, aimed at introducing aspects of recycling
and recyclability to designers.
Programme and talks
of the seminar.
