Construction
and demolition waste represent one of the largest waste
streams, in quantitative terms, within the European Union.
It is estimated to 180 million tonnes per year.
In some EU countries, high recycling rates have been
reached for the inert fraction, which is the main fraction
of the C&D waste. But recycling for the other C&D
waste fractions and in particular for plastic waste remains
poor. At the same time, plastic use in the construction
sector has increased these last decades and it raises
the question of its management when it becomes a waste.
In this context arises the Life project “Appricod”
in order to assess the potential for plastic recycling
in the construction and demolition activities.
Life-Appricod project started in November 2006 and is
expected to finish in May 2006, and is coordinated by
IBGE (Institut Bruxellois pour la Gestion de l’Environnement).
The other Appricod consortium partners are local and regional
authorities for waste management in Brussels, Porto, Ancona
and Catalonia, as well as construction and demolition
organizations, European plastic federations and ACR+.
Once finished the pilot projects, the Waste Agency of
Catalonia organizes a local Workshop on 31st Mars 2006
in Barcelona.
