6/93, of 15th July on the regulation of
waste, with the aim to achieve a waste management
with a high level of environmental protection
that should also improve quality of live,
the Government of Catalonia declared the
treatment of refrigerators and other appliances
that contain CFCs and the treatment of fluorescent
lamps and mercury vapour lamps to be a public
service, among others. As
a result of this decision, in 1995 the
Pont de Vilomara i Rocafort treatment
plant for CFC refrigerators was opened.
This was followed, three months later,
by the battery and fluorescent lamp treatment
plant, also in the same municipality.
In 2001, to prompt the creation
of infrastructures that provide for the
application of treatment in accordance
with that envisaged in the different bills
that followed the European directive on
WEEE, the Agència de Residus de Catalunya made
a public call for tenders for proposals
to recover WEEE of a domestic origin generated
in Catalonia, and chose the project presented
by the company ELECTRORECYCLING,
SA
In accordance with the collaboration
agreement signed by the Agència
de Residus de Catalunya and Electrorecycling,
SA, the collection and recovery of refrigerators
and fluorescent lamps performed in public
services also includes the collection
and treatment of waste from consumer electronics
and computing, the vast majority of which
is from practically all the tips in Catalonia. |
